Hair loss in women

Hair loss in women is more devastating than in men. In men, hair loss is seen as a normal part of ageing. In women however, even though hair loss is far more common than believed, hair loss is seen as a sign of illness. While there are a greater number of medical diseases associated with hair loss in women than in men, most women who lose hair experience female pattern hair loss. As with men, this hair loss is genetic. The pattern of hair loss in women is different from men. Women generally lose hair on the top of their head with preservation of the frontal hair line. Some women experience hair loss on the temples which is associated with a masculine appearance. Medical conditions must always be ruled out before proceeding with a hair transplant. Common causes of hair loss in women are thyroid conditions, anemia, polycystic ovaries, and autoimmune disorders. As in men, there are several scalp diseases associated with hair loss. Women are also more susceptible to hair loss from temporary massive shedding of hair; known as telogen effluvium, which can follow childbirth, weight loss, febrile illness or surgery.
