| Follicular
unit hair transplant |
|
We perform follicular unit hair transplantation.
Hair naturally grows in follicular units. Follicular units are
composed of one to four hairs that grow together and are related
to the same glandular structures. Only by respecting this follicular
unit arrangement can a natural appearance be obtained in the
transplanted area. Maintaining the integrity of the follicular
units will also ensure maximal growth. In order to ensure a
natural appearance and a soft hair line, the frontal region
must be created using only single hair follicular units. Occasionally,
in order to obtain a higher density, multiple follicular units
can be combined, but only in areas that are not highly visible.
Eyelash transplants are performed using two hair follicular
units. Facial hair transplants, including beard and eyebrows,
use exclusively single hair follicular units.
| Follicular
unit extraction (FUE) |
|
Follicular unit extraction or FUE uses
small 0.7 to 1.0 mm punches in order to individually extract
follicular units. Once these individual follicular units are
obtained, they are implanted using techniques identical to strip
excision, the classic technique. Instead of one linear scar
at the back of the head, there will be hundreds to thousands
of small punch scars throughout the scalp. Follicular unit extraction
takes two to three times longer and is usually twice more expensive
than Follicular unit strip excision. Follicular unit extraction
sessions are generally limited to smaller cases, while classic
strip excision will routinely produce over 2000 follicular unit
grafts. There can be substantially less growth after FUE than
classic strip excision. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is
appropriate for smaller cases, or when the scalp is no longer
sufficiently loose to allow for Follicular unit strip excision.
Dr Clas will discuss these options with you during your evaluation.
| Hair
transplantation for men |
|
Almost all hair loss in men is hereditary.
This is known as male pattern baldness and is caused by dihydrotestoterone
in genetically susceptible men. Men lose hair both at the front
and at the back of the head. Some men lose hair in only one
area. Both regions can be corrected with hair transplants. It
is generally considered more desirable to graft the frontal
region first as this frames the eyes and improves your appearance
more rapidly. Most hair transplants heal with few problems.
Donor hairs come from the back of your
head. Even the baldest person that you see has a ring of hair
at the back of the head. These are permanent hairs that resist
the effects of dihydrotestosterone, the cause of male pattern
baldness. We use these hairs to correct the bald areas. The
amount of bald area that can be corrected will depend on how
much hair is available at the back of your head. The amount
of hair that can be taken will also depend on the laxity of
your scalp. There are solutions even for men with advanced baldness.
During your evaluation, Doctor David
Clas will question you on your health history, your health habits,
your family history of hair loss, and your treatment objectives.
He will examine your scalp to exclude possible medical conditions
that can cause hair loss. He will pull out hairs in several
areas of your scalp to fully assess your situation. He will
test for the laxity or your scalp and look at any scars that
you may have. Only then, will it be possible for Doctor David
Clas to recommend a treatment plan. Obviously, you will have
a budget in mind that must also be discussed to establish the
best plan for you.
Hair transplantation is not expensive
when compared to the annual cost of less effective treatments
for hair loss. A treatment plan can be devised for men with
a limited budget. Come visit Doctor David Clas for a free personalized
evaluation. If you desire maximal confidentiality, for a fee,
Doctor David Clas will evaluate you at work or at home.
| Hair
transplantation for women |
|
Most hair loss in women is hereditary.
This female pattern baldness seems less dependent on hormones
than in men. Non hereditary causes of hair loss must be excluded
as they will not necessarily be corrected by hair transplantation.
Women generally lose hair on the top of their heads. The frontal
hair line is usually intact. Some women have hair loss in both
temporal regions which can leave them with a masculine appearance.
Both types of hair loss can be corrected with hair transplants.
Women tend to have thinner scalps and more remaining hair. Extra
care is required when grafting women. The hair transplantation
procedure is identical to that in men.
Donor hairs come from the back of your
head. Even the baldest woman that you see still has a ring of
hair at the back of the head. These are permanent hairs that
do not fall out. We use these hairs to correct the bald areas.
The amount of bald area that can be corrected will depend on
how much hair is available at the back of your head. The amount
of hair that can be taken will also depend on the laxity of
your scalp. There are solutions even for women with advanced
baldness.
During your evaluation, Doctor David

Doctor Clas will obtain a detailed history to evaluate all medical
causes of hair loss in women. He will examine your scalp to
exclude possible medical conditions that can cause hair loss.

| Eyebrow
and eyelash transplants |
|
These procedures are performed in both
men and women. Men lose their eyebrows from burns, scarring
or congenital absence of eyebrows. Women also can experience
these conditions but most grafts are performed to correct excessive
plucking. We also graft to increase length and density of eyelashes.
Hair transplants to the eyebrows will appear more natural than
tattoos and will last forever. Permanent makeup and tattoos
need to be retouched periodically. Eyebrow transplantation however,
is permanent. We can graft into your existing eyebrow tattoo
or permanent makeup. Should you prefer to remove the tattoo,
you must have this done before your eyebrow hair transplant.
For a natural appearance, eyebrows must
be grafted using only single hair follicular units. We use two
hair follicular units for eyelashes. You will need to train
your lashes and eyebrows to curve in the desired direction using
eyebrow curlers and styling gels. Occasionally, transplanted
hairs do not grow in the desired direction and must be plucked.
Both eyebrows and eyelash transplants will need to be trimmed
every 10 to 14 days.
| Beard
and moustache hair transplants |
|
Beards and moustaches can be augmented
or their contours improved with hair transplants. We can also
use hair transplants to hide scars on the face. Scalp hair is
most often used to augment density and improve contours of beard
and moustaches. In some cases, we can use beard hairs from underneath
your chin.
Sideburn transplantation is used to hide
scars or to correct and augment the contours of sideburns in
both men and women. Men most commonly want fuller sideburns.
Women generally need sideburn transplantation to hide scars
from cosmetic surgery, generally face lift procedures. We can
use either beard, body or scalp hair for sideburn transplantation
depending on the desired appearance and the quality of the available
hair.
It is possible to add hair anywhere on
the body. Chest hairs and pubic hairs are the most common body
hair transplants. We can use scalp or body hairs. This will
depend on what is available on your body. If we use scalp hairs,
they will need to be trimmed every 10 to 14 days.
| Transgender
hair transplants |
|
Special patients have special needs.
Depending on your needs, we can feminise or masculinise your
hairline. We are experienced in grafting beards and moustaches.
We can add chest hairs, change the pattern of pubic hairs, thicken
the eyebrows and change their contour, or correct non sex specific
balding.
It is possible to add hair to an existing
tattoo or to create a tattoo using only hair. You can change
the appearance of your hair tattoo by trimming or shaving.
| Revisions
of previous hair transplants and scalp scars |
|
There are several reasons for unsightly
scars on the scalp. Generally, scars are wide and visible because
hair root angles were not respected or the incision was closed
under too much tension. This is true for scars from accidents
or previous surgery. Neurosurgery craniotomy scars often require
revision. Paradoxically, some patients have wide scars because
they have very elastic scalps. Attention to precise alignment
of the wound edges, minimizing wound edge tension by undermining
the scalp, multilayer closure and the tricophytic closure are
all elements important for a narrow scar. Scars can either be
excised and revised using a trichophytic excision and multilayer
closure or hidden with follicular unit extraction grafts.
